In her book “The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers”, Amy Hollingsworth states that Fred Rogers deplored the demeaning behavior of people “throwing pies in other people’s faces.
You see – He was bullied when he was a child. He was overweight and other children did not like him to the point that they wanted to physically and emotionally abuse him. However, he had an angel in the form of an older neighbor who would take him in and protect him from the bullies. Fred resented the teasing. He resented how it made him feel.
But he had two directions to go. He could have
1. Turned into a bully himself.
2. Learned how to treat others better.
Mr. Rogers chose #2 and made a career out of it. Mr. Rogers created beauty out of pain.
